BBQ Lesson: Candy Thermometer (Picture 22)

Remember that candy thermometer? Here is how it mounts in the WSM -- right through the vent in the lid. It's not elegant, but it works. Some WSM owners actually modify their units by drilling a proper mounting hole in the lid, but I never felt the need to do so. Yes, this method does block one of the vent holes, but it hasn't been an issue for me.

As far as I can tell, the only reason Weber includes vent covers on the lid is to keep moisture out of the unit when it is not in use. You always want to keep the lid vents open while cooking.

NOTE: Apparently new models of the WSM actually have a thermometer built in, as Weber responded to numerous customer requests for one. Since these things never seem to wear out, I don't seem one in my future.thermometer pictures
